You will be empowered to define and lead technical initiatives, helping identify and proactively drive improvements in process, technology and production operations supporting millions of users.
This Staff individual contributor role carries broad technical ownership: a recognized expert and hands-on system architect whose decisions shape reliable production services across multiple partner teams. The ideal candidate brings deep full-stack engineering and production experience, strong automation instincts, cloud/container operations expertise, incident leadership, and curiosity for using AI-assisted workflows to improve operational quality, release confidence and delivery speed.
Responsibilities:
Lead application operations and production support for internal and public-facing services in AWS and container environments, with focus on availability, resiliency, scalability, performance and security.
Define and evolve production operations architecture, readiness standards and reusable patterns for services/features, including automation, monitoring, runbooks, rollback plans and operational acceptance criteria.
Architect and scale tools, scripts and automation frameworks across API/service telemetry, release validation and operational readiness to reduce toil and improve incident response.
Establish CI/CD operational gates, production validation practices and governance mechanisms that improve release confidence, scalability and engineering velocity.
Advance observability, event correlation and operational metrics using service health signals, automation health, release risk indicators, dashboards and alerts that reduce MTTD and MTTR.
Partner with SRE, data services, CI/CD, service engineering, platform hosting, product and business teams to shift reliability left and improve shared ownership of production quality.
Lead performance, capacity, infrastructure modernization and cost optimization for services using AWS, Kubernetes, EKS/UKS, autoscaling and related cloud patterns.
Use AI-assisted and agentic tools, such as Codex, Claude, Cursor or similar, to accelerate development, operational automation and production-signal analysis.
Provide rotational on-call support and improve incident workflows using Slack, JIRA, ServiceNow, BigPanda and related escalation systems; lead RCA and systemic fixes for recurring production issues.
Key Qualifications:
Staff-level hands-on engineer equally comfortable with software development, systems engineering, production operations and service architecture.
System Architect and full-stack engineer who connects customer experience, application behavior, APIs, data flows, infrastructure and operational controls into resilient designs.
Proven ability to define operational standards, quality gates, reusable frameworks and governance practices across teams.
Independent technical leader who influences cross-functional partners, mentors engineers and drives adoption of scalable practices.
Strong systems-thinking and troubleshooting depth across runtime, cloud, Kubernetes/EKS/UKS, network, observability, release and incident layers.
Required Skills:
Distributed service architecture and operations, Unix/Linux systems internals, networking, TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS, load balancing and API troubleshooting.
AWS service operations, including ALB, Route 53, API Gateway, Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache and Java/API services.
Containers and orchestration, including Docker, Kubernetes, EKS/UKS and Fargate.
Automation and software development in Python, Go or Java; source control and configuration management using GitHub/Git, Ansible, Chef or similar.
Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD using Terraform, CloudFormation, Jenkins, Spinnaker or comparable tooling.
Observability, incident management and collaboration tooling such as Datadog, CloudWatch, Splunk, Grafana, BigPanda, Slack, JIRA and ServiceNow.
Strong communication skills with the ability to adjust messaging by audience, translate complex technical issues for cross-functional business partners, and articulate both technical detail and customer/business impact.
Data reporting, analytics or operational data platforms such as SQL, MySQL, Oracle, Snowflake or big data systems.
AI-assisted development or agentic engineering workflow experience using tools such as Codex, Claude, Cursor or similar.
Experience:
BS degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related technical area.
10+ years operating and supporting services in production environments at scale.
5+ years AWS Cloud experience deploying, tuning and operating Java/API services.

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
Training and serving frontier AI models requires compute infrastructure at a scale and density that pushes past what conventional data center designs were built to handle. Anthropic’s Data Center team is responsible for delivering that physical infrastructure — partnering with build partners, equipment manufacturers, and vendors to stand up facilities that can reliably cool some of the largest accelerator clusters in the industry.
As a Senior Data Center Mechanical Engineer based in the United States, you’ll lead the design direction and technical oversight of building mechanical systems — cooling, chilled-water distribution, liquid cooling, plumbing, and fire protection — across our rapidly expanding U.S. portfolio. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on driving and reviewing mechanical design from concept through detailed design and construction documentation produced by external engineering firms and development partners, ensuring every facility meets Anthropic’s standards for reliability, efficiency, and scalability. You’ll own the mechanical design direction from Basis of Design through construction and commissioning, serving as the primary technical interface between Anthropic’s internal teams and our external engineering and development partners.
A central part of this role is speed-to-capacity through prefabrication and modular construction — modular cooling skids, prefabricated piping assemblies, and design for offsite manufacture that compress schedules and reduce onsite labor. You’ll bring deep familiarity with U.S. mechanical, plumbing, and fire codes and the local regulatory environment, and ensure the cooling architecture keeps pace with rapidly increasing rack densities and the shift toward direct-to-chip liquid cooling. Strong candidates will bring deep mission-critical mechanical design experience and the judgment to make sound trade-offs when the standard playbook doesn’t apply.
Responsibilities
Design direction & review
Drive mechanical design concepts for data center cooling plants, chilled-water distribution, liquid cooling (direct-to-chip and CDUs), plumbing, and fire protection systems.
Review and direct design drawings, specifications, and construction documentation produced by external engineering firms, ensuring alignment with Anthropic’s Basis of Design and owner requirements.
Evaluate design submittals, shop drawings, and equipment selections; respond to RFIs with clear technical direction.
Identify design conflicts and drive resolution across mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines.
Maintain and evolve Anthropic’s internal mechanical design standards and reference configurations.
Prefabrication & modular delivery
Drive Anthropic’s prefabricated and modular mechanical strategy — modular cooling skids, prefabricated piping and pump assemblies, and design for offsite manufacture and onsite assembly — to accelerate deployment and reduce onsite labor.
Drive standardization of modular mechanical designs across sites while preserving flexibility for site-specific constraints and evolving hardware generations.
External partner & vendor coordination
Serve as the primary mechanical engineering point of contact for external developers, design engineers, and construction partners across the U.S. portfolio.
Develop scopes of work, equipment specifications, and bid packages for mechanical infrastructure.
Perform technical due diligence on third-party and colocation facilities, evaluating mechanical designs against program requirements and redundancy targets.
Coordinate with equipment vendors and manufacturers on cooling system procurement, including chillers, CDUs, pumps, and piping assemblies, and partner with supply chain to mitigate lead-time and single-source risk.
Construction & commissioning
Monitor mechanical system installation for compliance with design intent, applicable U.S. codes and standards, and industry best practice.
Conduct site visits to review progress, resolve field issues, and validate construction quality; travel to sites across the region as needed.
Support testing and commissioning of mechanical systems; analyze data and troubleshoot issues against design intent.
You may be a good fit if you
Have 10+ years of experience designing building mechanical systems for data centers or mission-critical facilities, across the project lifecycle from concept design through construction, commissioning, and handover.
Have deep familiarity with U.S. mechanical, plumbing, and fire codes and standards — including the International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), International Building Code (IBC), NFPA 13 (automatic sprinkler systems), ASME B31 piping codes, and applicable state and local amendments, alongside ASHRAE guidance (incl. TC 9.9).
Have strong knowledge of chilled-water systems, air-cooled cooling plants, liquid cooling (direct-to-chip and CDUs), and redundant piping configurations.
Have hands-on experience with prefabricated and modular mechanical infrastructure — modular cooling skids, prefabricated piping assemblies, and design for offsite manufacture.
Have experience driving and reviewing mechanical design work produced by external engineering consultants, and are proficient reading and marking up construction drawings, P&IDs, and single-line diagrams.
Hold a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; a Professional Engineer (PE) license (or eligibility) is valued but not required.
Communicate clearly and can drive technical decisions across internal teams and external partners, and are results-oriented with a bias toward practical solutions.
Are able to travel up to ~30% to data center sites across the region.
Strong candidates may also have
15+ years of experience designing building mechanical systems for data centers or mission-critical facilities.
Direct project experience delivering data centers in multiple U.S. markets (e.g., Virginia, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, Oregon).
Experience with thermal-hydraulic modeling software (AFT Fathom, Cadence 6SigmaET, ANSYS, or similar), CFD modeling, and energy analysis.
Familiarity with controls/BAS systems and sequences of operation for cooling plants.
Experience preparing SOWs, facility audits, and TCO analyses.
A track record building modular prefabricated products in mechanical or electrical areas of the data center, and driving designs toward offsite manufacturing.
Proficiency with Revit MEP or AutoCAD MEP.

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Go To Market ("GTM") Systems builds and runs the platform that Sales and contracting operate on, a production Salesforce org plus a growing portfolio of custom internal applications and agents. These systems process revenue-impacting transactions, guide critical business processes, and produce data the rest of the company runs on. Today the path from request, development, test, and pull request to production push is manual and slows the team down rather than speeding it up.
We are hiring a DevOps / AgentOps engineer to build and run that path. You will stand up and maintain an AI-first CI/CD pipeline covering both Salesforce and custom application code. This release pipeline will support three modes: fully agentic, human-in-the-loop, and AI-assisted. Anthropic is an unusual place to do this. Our own frontier models are part of the toolkit and the question we want you to answer is what a delivery system looks like when you design it for agents and humans working side by side rather than retrofitting agents into a pipeline built for humans alone.
You will work closely with a team of business systems analysts, software engineers, and integration engineers to develop the solution to accelerate their everyday work. The pipeline you build is the one path to production for a system under audit, so the guardrails, approvals, and audit trail are part of the product, not an afterthought.
Key responsibilities
Design, build, and operate the CI/CD pipeline for a production Salesforce org and a portfolio of custom internal applications, from branching and validation through deploy and rollback
Define how a change is classified and routed into an agentic, human-in-the-loop, or AI-assisted lane, what gates each lane passes through, and how a change escalates between lanes when validation fails or risk changes
Build the agent operations layer: what agents are scoped to do in the pipeline, what tools and permissions they hold, how they are sandboxed differently for Salesforce and custom-app work, and what they are not trusted to do unsupervised
Implement approval workflows that keep PR review and business sign-off as distinct gates, with clear rules for which changes need which, who is asked, and what evidence they see
Own environment strategy, secrets handling, deploy observability, and kill-switch and rollback mechanics across all three lanes
Produce the audit trail and evidence a SOX-scoped platform needs
Measure and report on the pipeline itself: lead time, failure rate, share of work moving through each lane, and where humans are still doing work an agent should be doing
Pair with engineers on the team as they move onto the pipeline, and turn what you learn from them into better defaults
Minimum qualifications
Have built and run a CI/CD pipeline for a team, including the branching model, merge gating, and rollback path, and can explain the choices you made and what you would change
Have hands-on experience with Salesforce deployment mechanics (metadata API, source-tracked development, org-to-org promotion) or a comparable enterprise platform
Work fluently with AI coding tools and agentic workflows, and have opinions about which kinds of engineering work belong in the hands of an agent, which need a human review, and where the boundaries are
Design for the failure case: you think about blast radius, sandboxing, permissions, and what happens when an automated change is wrong before you think about the happy path
Are comfortable working across GitHub Actions or a comparable CI system, infrastructure as code, and the scripting needed to glue platforms together
Write clear design documents and can defend a design to engineers, business approvers, and auditors in language each of them will accept
Preferred qualifications
Have shipped agents or automation that operate inside a production system of record, and have dealt with what happens when they misbehave
Have operated a platform under SOX or a similar audit regime and know what evidence a change-management control actually requires
Have experience with Salesforce DevOps tooling (Gearset, Copado, sfdx-based pipelines) and know where those tools stop and custom work begins
Have run a migration from ad hoc or manual deploys to a governed pipeline and can talk about how you kept a team shipping while you did it
Have built approval or notification workflows in Slack or a comparable tool that people actually used

As an Applied AI Engineer on our Enterprise team, your role is to guide some of Germany's largest businesses to the frontier of AI and help them deploy Claude into their operations, their products, and their ways of working. You will become the go-to Claude Platform specialist and trusted technical advisor for your customers, advising their engineering teams on architecture, agent design, and evaluation, and working with the C-level and senior executives who sponsor these programmes to show the business value Claude can create and help them reach a confident decision to build on Claude.
Enterprise deals are different. Procurement cycles are longer, more stakeholders are involved, and success depends on being able to connect the technical work to the outcomes the boardroom cares about. You will be as comfortable advising an engineering team on evaluation and architecture as you are presenting a value case to a CIO or CTO, and you will carry the technical thread across every stage of a multi-quarter engagement. Much of this work happens in German, with German executives and engineering teams, so native or fluent German is essential for the role.
You will partner closely with Enterprise Account Executives and Applied AI Architects to take each customer from first conversation, through technical evaluation, proof of value and procurement, to the decision to build on Claude. Once they have decided, you set their systems integration partner up to deliver, agreeing the target architecture and what good looks like, and you stay close as the customer's technical advisor on Claude throughout deployment, while the partner does the build. Working alongside Anthropic's Product and Engineering teams, you will use your knowledge of the Claude Platform to advise on evaluation, recommend architectures that meet enterprise security and scale requirements, and create the technical and business resources that help large organisations succeed with Claude.
Responsibilities
Partner with Enterprise Account Executives and Applied AI Architects to take enterprise customers in Germany from first conversation, through technical evaluation, proof of value and procurement, to the decision to build on Claude
Lead the technical side of each opportunity through to that decision, and remain the customer's technical advisor on Claude as they deploy
Set customers and their systems integration partners up to deliver: agree the target architecture, define what good looks like, and stay on hand to advise the delivery team as the build progresses
Guide enterprise customers to the frontier of AI, advising them on how to deploy Claude into their operations, their products, and their ways of working
Help customer engineering teams see how they would build on Claude, covering architecture, agent design and evaluation, so they can make a confident decision
Build and present the business value case for Claude with C-level and senior executives, in German and English, linking technical capabilities to measurable outcomes such as cost, revenue, risk, and time to market
Guide customers through long, multi-stakeholder procurement and adoption cycles, including technical evaluations, proofs of concept, security and architecture reviews, and a clear path to production
Work with Account Executives on account strategy, deal qualification, and executive engagement plans, and with Applied AI Architects to keep context and continuity across every engagement
Run executive briefings, technical workshops, and enablement sessions for both leadership and engineering audiences
Navigate enterprise requirements around security, compliance, data residency, and governance, working with Anthropic's internal teams where needed
Identify patterns across enterprise engagements and feed insights back to Product, Engineering, and the wider Applied AI team
Travel to customer sites across Germany for executive meetings, workshops, and relationship building
You may be a good fit if you have
Native or fluent German, written and spoken, as you will work day to day with German enterprise customers at both executive and engineering level
6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, Solutions Architect, Forward Deployed Engineer, or technical founder
Experience in a pre-sales or technical advisory role selling into large enterprises, ideally in the German market, including scoping and designing complex solutions
Experience with value-based selling, meaning you can build a business case, quantify impact, and present it to senior decision makers
Comfort presenting to, and building relationships with, C-level and VP-level stakeholders
Experience owning the technical win in enterprise deals: evaluations, proofs of concept and technical due diligence with engineering, security, legal and procurement teams
Production experience with LLM-powered applications, including prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale
A hands-on engineering background, including building and deploying production applications, so you can relate to engineering leaders and their teams
Familiarity with enterprise security, compliance, and architecture requirements, and experience working through them with customer teams
The ability to explain complex AI concepts clearly to both technical and executive audiences, and to move between industries such as financial services, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing
A passion for making powerful technology safe and beneficial
Logistics
Minimum education:

Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship:
We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.
Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.
To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit

Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

Our organization brings together the strengths of Wolt and Deliveroo and supports merchants across 37 countries. We work across the merchant journey, including onboarding, business growth and support, analytics and recommendations, menu and order management, integrations, and merchant applications.
Our teams sit close to the business. Rather than primarily building foundational platforms, we build products and features on top of our existing platforms to solve real merchant and market needs, including local business requirements, growth opportunities, and operational challenges.
📍This open role is based in our tech hubs in
Helsinki
or
Berlin
.
Please note:
This role requires being based in Berlin/Helsinki on a hybrid basis. We are currently unable to offer fully remote work, visa sponsorship, or relocation support for this opportunity.

Our backend services primarily use
Go and Kotlin
, while our frontend applications use technologies such as
TypeScript and React
.
We also work with technologies including Kafka, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, gRPC, and modern cloud infrastructure.
Our Humble Expectations
We're looking for engineers who have:
An AI-first mindset, with a deep experience in leveraging modern AI tools and solid engineering principles to solve problems end-to-end, independently of any specific technology stack.

not
need to be equally strong in frontend and backend. We welcome different balances of experience. You might be primarily a backend engineer who is comfortable making frontend changes when needed, or a frontend-focused engineer who is happy to work with APIs and backend services.
What matters most is that you are comfortable working across boundaries to deliver the right solution.
Nice to Have
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be a plus:
Merchant-facing or internal operational tools.
Analytics, recommendations, or decisioning systems.
Grocery, retail, restaurants, logistics, or marketplace technology.
Integrations with external business systems.
Kafka or other streaming technologies.
Cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Kubernetes, or Docker.
Why Join Us?
You'll work on products that directly affect how merchants interact with Wolt Deliveroo and DoorDash across Europe. The scope is broad and close to the business, giving you the opportunity to work on meaningful problems across different parts of the merchant journey while developing your skills across the stack.

An overview of this role
As an Intermediate Backend Engineer (Python) in GitLab's Agent Foundations stage, you'll go beyond using AI tools. You'll help build the foundations for GitLab's agentic AI experiences: the platform that lets AI agents work across the whole software delivery lifecycle, not just write code. That covers the reusable building blocks agents and flows are made from as well as our core harness, Duo Developer.
Most of your work will be backend engineering in Python, using libraries such as LangGraph to build secure, reliable and scalable features in our AI Gateway. You'll also work across the stack where needed. You'll work closely with engineers across the stage and other AI Engineering teams. This is a high-visibility area where GitLab's core platform meets its AI strategy.
What you'll do
Develop, ship and maintain features for the Duo Agent Platform in the Duo Workflow Service, the AI Gateway and, where needed, the GitLab monolith. Keep them secure, well-tested and performant.
Build and improve agentic flows and their reusable parts with LangChain and LangGraph, including the Flow Registry.
Work with Product Management, UX, frontend, backend and AI specialists to refine requirements and ship improvements in small iterations.
Design, implement and review APIs (including GraphQL and REST) and the backend logic behind them, with reliable, scalable and clear contracts for clients such as the GitLab monolith, IDE extensions and Duo CLI.
Improve and extend automated testing (pytest and other frameworks), including evaluations of agent and flow behavior, to strengthen quality and give developers faster feedback.
Share standards, patterns and learnings with other engineers to raise the bar for responsible AI integration and evidence-driven engineering.
Join Tier 2
on-call rotations
to troubleshoot production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency.
Keep an eye on the competitive landscape to help keep GitLab's agent platform best-in-class as more work becomes agentic.
What you'll bring
Experience building and maintaining production Python backend applications, including APIs, asynchronous or background processing, and data models.
Experience with LLM application frameworks such as LangGraph, or designing and shipping AI-powered backend features or harnesses.
Skill in designing or extending APIs (REST, GraphQL or gRPC) with attention to scalability, maintainability and backward compatibility.
Comfort working across the stack in a mature codebase. Familiarity with Ruby on Rails and/or JavaScript and Vue is a plus.
Experience finding and fixing performance bottlenecks in applications.
Clear written and verbal communication, including technical proposals and documentation, in a remote, async, cross-functional team.
Openness to learning and to applying skills from related technologies or fields.
About the team
The
Agent Foundations stage
builds the foundations for GitLab's agentic AI experiences. We provide the platform, catalog and execution features that help teams deliver resilient agents and flows to customers. The stage has three groups: Agent Developer, AI Catalog and Agent Execution. Between them, they own the GitLab Duo Developer foundational flow and the Flow Registry; the AI Catalog, including custom agents, custom flows and external agent integrations; and agent execution, agent tools and agent observability.
Our engineers work async-first across EMEA, AMER, and India timezones. We work with teams across AI engineering and the rest of GitLab so the Duo Agent Platform can power many of GitLab's AI features.
