Role Overview
This is a senior individual contributor role with significant architectural ownership. You will set the technical direction for how Backblaze detects, correlates, and responds to infrastructure incidents across our data centers, and you will mentor other engineers on the team as that platform matures. If you have a passion for making complex distributed systems visible, you are comfortable making architecture decisions that will outlive your tenure, and you are excited about applying AI and agentic automation to infrastructure operations, this role was built for you..
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Set technical direction and standards for observability across the organization, including instrumentation conventions, alerting philosophy, and dashboard design patterns.
Mentor engineers on the Observability team and act as a technical resource for SRE, Storage Engineering, and Network Engineering on observability practice.
Lead design reviews for observability work and represent the team in cross-functional architecture discussions.
Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions for observability and AIOps tooling, including data sovereignty and compliance considerations.
Produce and maintain design documentation, runbooks, and architectural decision records that make the platform operable and extensible by future contributors.
Observability Platform
Own and evolve our metrics pipeline, including VictoriaMetrics, Prometheus, and the Consul-based service discovery layer that keeps scrape targets current as infrastructure scales.
Own and expand our logging stack (OpenSearch, Logstash, and Filebeat) across all Backblaze data centers.
Architect and expand distributed tracing with Jaeger and OpenTelemetry, extending coverage beyond the current application instrumentation to new services.
Define and maintain Grafana dashboard standards for infrastructure, storage, and application performance visibility.
Drive expansion of internal application telemetry in partnership with application teams to improve visibility.
Define capacity and retention strategy for the telemetry stack as the fleet grows.
Infrastructure & Automation
Own infrastructure-as-code for observability stack deployments across multiple Kubernetes clusters.
Write and review automated playbooks for configuration management and automation across Debian-based bare metal servers.
Partner with the SRE team on Consul-based service discovery for VictoriaMetrics scrape target automation.
Lead Ceph storage observability, including OSD health, performance metrics, and integration with alerting.
Collaborate with the Network Engineering team on BGP, routing, and network-level observability.
Required Qualifications
8+ years in a systems engineering, SRE, DevOps, or observability-focused role, including demonstrated technical leadership on a platform or infrastructure team.
Deep hands-on experience with Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, or equivalent metrics platforms, including PromQL, Alertmanager, and operating these systems at scale.
Experience designing and operating log aggregation pipelines such as Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, Logstash, Filebeat, or similar.
Working knowledge of distributed tracing (Jaeger, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent), including instrumentation strategy, not just operation.
Proficiency in Python and/or Go for automation and tooling.
Experience with Kubernetes, including deploying workloads and understanding pod networking and storage.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tooling and configuration management.
Strong understanding of Linux internals, with Debian/Ubuntu preferred.
Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar on a team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You'll work across engineering, SRE, security, and leadership, and you'll be expected to write design documents that drive decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading the evaluation or deployment of AIOps tooling, including alert correlation, deduplication, or automated root cause analysis.
Experience building, deploying, or operating AI agents or agentic AI systems. This is a strong differentiator.
Familiarity with LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI) or self-hosted LLM inference in an infrastructure context.
Familiarity with Ceph storage, including OSD management, pool configuration, and CRUSH maps.
Experience with incident management platforms.
Familiarity with BGP, network observability, or working in multi-DC environments.
Experience with secrets management in production environments.
Experience operating in a regulated or compliance-driven environment.
Prior experience in a storage-focused company or hyperscale infrastructure environment.
What You'll Work On
A telemetry stack spanning several data centers with exabytes of storage under observation.
Real infrastructure at scale: Kubernetes, Ceph, Vitess, KVM, and a custom storage platform serving hundreds of thousands of customers.
A collaborative team that values engineering excellence, transparency, and operational rigor.
Pay Transparency
To provide greater transparency to candidates, we share base pay ranges for all US-based job postings regardless of state. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, skills, depth of work experience, and relevant licenses/credentials.

Seek Excellence.
Be Selective To Be Effective.
Be Highly Aligned, Loosely Coupled.
Disagree Transparently.
Encourage Independent Decision-Making.
Build Dream Teams.
Who You Are:
You are a hands-on construction leader who has delivered large-scale, mission-critical data center or comparable infrastructure from start of construction through commissioning and turnover. You know what it takes to run a major building on a live campus: sequencing trades, protecting the schedule, and keeping safety and quality from becoming trade-offs. You lead teams from the front, hold contractors and partners to a high standard, and raise issues early and honestly. You are equally comfortable walking the building with a superintendent and presenting schedule, cost, and risk to senior leadership. You believe the digital economy depends on infrastructure delivered right, and delivered on time.
What You'll Do:
As Senior Manager, Data Center Construction at Galaxy's Helios campus in Afton, TX, you will be Galaxy's accountable leader for construction of a large-scale data center building on the campus. You will report to the VP, Campus Construction Manager and work alongside peer Senior Managers who each own a building or scope, with shared accountability for the safety, schedule, cost, and quality standards that keep the campus aligned. You will own your building from preconstruction handoff through commissioning and turnover to operations, and you will lead the on-site Galaxy team and contractor relationships that make it happen.
Key Responsibilities:
Own Data Center Facility Delivery: Serve as the single point of accountability for construction of a large-scale data center facility, from GMP handoff through energization, Level 1-5 commissioning, integrated systems testing (IST), and turnover to operations. Drive the facility to its safety, schedule, cost, and quality commitments.
Manage Schedule and Progress: Own the building schedule and track progress against baseline. Identify critical-path threats early, and direct recovery and mitigation plans before they affect milestones. Provide clear schedule inputs to the campus master schedule.
Manage Project Risk and Contingency: Maintain a quantified risk register covering schedule, cost, supply chain, labor, weather, and trade-interface risks. Control owner contingency drawdown, run structured risk reviews with the GC and trade partners, and drive mitigation before exposure becomes impact.
Drive Safety Culture: Set and enforce Galaxy's safety standards at the building level. Partner with Galaxy EHS and contractor safety leadership to sustain a zero-incident environment, and hold the team accountable for leading indicators as well as outcomes.
Oversee Contractors and Trade Partners: Manage the day-to-day and executive-level relationship with the general contractor and key trade partners. Ensure alignment on milestones, quality, safety, staffing, and commercial performance, and escalate issues early.
Control Cost and Change: Oversee pay applications, change orders, forecasts, and budget tracking for your building under the GMP. Enforce disciplined change management and provide accurate cost reporting to campus and executive leadership.
Lead Integrated Project Controls and Forecasting: Own the facility's integrated cost, schedule, and cash flow forecast on a monthly cycle. Validate GC-reported progress against independent percent-complete and earned value analysis, report cost-to-complete and forecast variances, and give development and finance leadership a reliable view of capital deployment and funding requirements.
Administer the Commercial Framework: Administer the GMP agreement and related owner contracts, including notices, allowances, buyout and savings, delay and impact claims, backcharges, retainage, and lien waivers. Protect Galaxy's commercial position and resolve disputes at the lowest level possible, partnering with Legal as needed.
Manage OFCI Integration: Work closely with Pre-Construction and the OFCI procurement and logistics teams to ensure UPS, generators, chillers, switchgear, and other owner-furnished equipment arrive, are set, and are installed without impacting the construction schedule.
Drive Utility and Energization Readiness: Coordinate with the serving utility, interconnect and substation teams, and Galaxy's power development group to align permanent power availability, energization sequencing, and test windows with construction and commissioning milestones. Treat power delivery as a critical-path item and escalate early.
Lead Commissioning and Turnover: Partner with the on-site commissioning manager, 3rd party Cx agent, and operations teams to ensure systematic testing, closeout, and clean turnover of the building to operations.
Manage Customer Delivery Commitments: Serve as the construction lead for customer-facing delivery milestones, including ready-for-service dates. Ensure facility handoff meets contractual commitments and the customer's acceptance criteria.
Ensure Quality: Enforce Galaxy's QA/QC standards on your building. Escalate and resolve systemic quality issues with contractors and design partners.
Coordinate Across the Campus: Work with peer Senior Managers and the VP to resolve cross-building conflicts in resources, laydown, site logistics, access, utilities, and sequencing.
Advance Lean and Prefabrication: Apply Galaxy's modularization, prefabrication, and lean delivery initiatives on your building, and capture lessons learned so each building is more repeatable than the last.
Manage Regulatory and Inspection Requirements: Work with local authorities, inspectors, utilities, and consultants to ensure compliance with codes and permit requirements.
Report to Leadership: Provide frequent, candid status updates to senior leadership and communicate building status, risks, and forecasts to internal stakeholders across Pre-Construction, Design Engineering, Operations, and Security.
What We're Looking For:
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or equivalent experience.
7+ years of experience delivering large-scale mission-critical projects, with at least 3 years in a senior role leading a project or building team through construction.
Demonstrated success delivering a data center, or comparable mission-critical facility, from start of construction through commissioning and turnover.
Working knowledge of construction delivery models (including GMP), risk management, and contractor oversight.
Technical fluency across MEP, commissioning, civil, and structural systems.
Experience integrating OFCI equipment and supporting commissioning.
Strong command of cost control, change management, and schedule analysis.
Familiarity with Procore, Primavera P6, Bluebeam, and SharePoint.
Full-time, on-site presence at Helios (Afton, TX)
What You Bring:
A track record of leading and developing high-performing construction teams.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence technical and executive stakeholders.
Sound judgment under pressure and a bias toward early, honest escalation.
A commitment to safety, quality, and executional excellence.

- Must be eligible and able to attain relevant national and NATO security clearances.
- Must be based in-country and native level speaker of the country you're deploying to.
THE MISSION OF THE FORWARD DEPLOYED AI ENGINEER
In this role, you'll be the hands-on AI builder defense and intelligence customers rely on. You’ll deploy ICEYE’s intelligence platform into secure (often air-gapped) environments and rapidly ship AI-powered workflows on top of it—everything from Docker-based deployments to RAG systems fusing SAR imagery with intelligence reports. This is a ship-code-daily role: turning raw satellite data into mission-critical tools analysts use to protect nations.
WHO WE ARE
ICEYE is the world leader in sovereign intelligence from space. We deliver persistent monitoring capabilities to detect and respond to changes in any location on Earth.
ICEYE owns the world's largest and most advanced SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellite constellation. To our customers we provide intelligence with unmatched quality, latency and revisit times, in any weather, day or night. To governments who choose to operate their own constellation we provide this proven capability as a sovereign system.
ICEYE-built constellations serve customers in defence and intelligence, environmental monitoring, insurance and emergency management. We enable fast decisions that contribute to a safer future.
Founded and headquartered in Finland, ICEYE operates globally with over 1000 employees across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES:
PLATFORM DEPLOYMENT & INTEGRATION
- Deploy ICEYE's intelligence platform into customer secure environments (on-premise, air-gapped networks, classified data centers).
- Build and maintain containerized applications (Docker) and manage deployments in customer Kubernetes clusters.
- Develop APIs and data pipelines connecting ICEYE systems to customer C4ISR infrastructure and intelligence tools.
- Troubleshoot deployment issues in disconnected environments without external internet access.
AI SOLUTION DEVELOPMENT & CUSTOMIZATION
- Build Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems that combine ICEYE SAR data with customer intelligence documents for context-aware analysis.
- Develop AI agents and workflows using frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph, or similar tools to automate analytical tasks.
- Implement prompt engineering strategies and conversational AI interfaces that enable analysts to query satellite data using natural language.
- Create Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations connecting AI systems with customer data sources.
DATA FUSION & INTELLIGENCE WORKFLOWS
- Build data fusion pipelines combining SAR imagery with additional intelligence sources (AIS, RF signals, optical imagery, SIGINT).
- Develop automated workflows that correlate and cross-reference information across different data modalities.
- Create lightweight tools, dashboards, and alerting systems tailored to customer operational needs.
CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT & RAPID PROTOTYPING
- Work embedded with intelligence analysts, data scientists, and military operators to understand mission-critical problems.
- Rapidly prototype AI-powered solutions (code first, polish later) that address immediate operational requirements.
- Conduct hands-on training sessions on platform capabilities and AI workflow usage.
- Gather customer feedback and translate it into technical requirements for ICEYE's product and engineering teams.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
MUST HAVE SKILLS:
- 3+ years hands-on software engineering building and deploying production systems.
- Strong Python programming skills (required) plus one of: Go, TypeScript, or Rust.
- Hands-on experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and RAG systems.
- Working knowledge of agent frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, pydantic-ai) and vector databases.
- Experience with Docker and deploying in secure / isolated / air-gapped environments.
- Practical experience with APIs, data pipelines, and integrating systems in production,
- Familiarity with Linux and basic Kubernetes operations.
- Builder mindset: ship fast, iterate with feedback, and prioritize working solutions over perfect architecture.
- Strong communication + customer engagement, able to work embedded with intelligence analysts / military operators.
- Strong spoken and written English, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel 40–60% to customer sites within the region.
NICE TO HAVE SKILLS:
- Experience in defense, intelligence, or government operational environments.
- Deploying to on-prem data centers and/or air-gapped networks.
- Familiarity with geospatial data, satellite imagery, or remote sensing.
- Experience with MCP integrations, multi-agent systems, or agentic workflows.
- Deeper Kubernetes, IaC (Terraform/Ansible), and/or offline CI/CD.
- Understanding of intelligence analysis workflows and defense/government requirements.
- Experience with data fusion, multi-source intelligence integration, or GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Background in solution engineering, technical consulting, or customer success.
- Experience in defense tech (e.g., Palantir, Anduril, Scale AI, similar startups).
