An overview of this role
At GitLab, People technology never stands still, and this role will be at the center of it. Reporting to the Senior Director, People Technology, you’ll work alongside senior team members and partner closely with People Operations, People Business Partners and Talent Acquisition to keep our People systems running at the speed of a fast-moving, innovative tech company. No two days will look the same. One day you’re running recurring processes and answering questions from teams across the organization, the next you’re preparing Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) audit evidence, building reports, writing test cases or delivering quarterly and annual changes and system upgrades. Using cycle-time analysis, best-practice research and AI tools, you’ll find better ways to operate and create streamlined, delightful experiences for the people using our systems, while growing your career in an all-remote, async-first environment.
What You’ll Do
Keep pace with the daily rhythm of a high-growth company by owning recurring processes, monitoring system health, resolving issues quickly and serving as a go-to resource for teams across the organization, especially People Operations, People Business Partners and Talent Acquisition.
Protect data integrity by administering system security, assigning and maintaining security roles, and running regular system and security audits.
Configure, test and deploy day-to-day enhancements as well as quarterly and annual changes, including annual People programs, so every update lands cleanly and on schedule. Support upgrades and releases by reviewing new features, running regression tests and helping stakeholders get ready for what’s changing.
Write and run test cases, and keep clear documentation of configurations, business processes, and reporting and integration schedules. Load mass datasets and distribute policies and documents with confidence and thorough testing.
Prepare and maintain SOX information technology general controls (ITGC) audit evidence and internal controls documentation, following access, security and change-management standards with care.
Build and maintain reports and dashboards that help stakeholders make decisions. Use cycle times and process data to find friction, then recommend and make configuration changes and measure their impact.
Help team members get the most out of their tools through training and enablement. Research best practices and new capabilities, and use AI every day to automate manual tasks, speed up analysis and share what you learn.
Support senior team members on cross-team projects and implementations, owning your workstreams and delivering quality results on time.
What You’ll Bring
Hands-on HR technology experience, including exposure to Workday configuration, testing or system support.
Exposure to public company operating procedures, such as SOX ITGC controls, audit evidence and change management.
A curious, puzzle-loving approach to problem-solving, backed by experience investigating issues, analyzing process data and finding the “why” behind a problem.
An AI-forward mindset, with experience using AI tools in your daily work to automate tasks, speed up analysis and improve processes.
Experience validating system changes and documenting findings clearly, along with close attention to detail and sound discretion with highly confidential information.
Independence and an ownership mindset: you take accountability for outcomes, move work forward with confidence and follow through on commitments.
A collaborative, customer-focused approach. You partner openly, design with the end user’s experience in mind, and bring polished options and a recommendation when you raise a problem.
A love for turning complex processes into simple, delightful experiences that let people focus on their best work.
Helpful but not required: experience with Serval, Greenhouse, Slack or Google Workspace; building reports and dashboards; supporting implementations, upgrades or releases, including regression testing; or working in a fast-paced, all-remote or async-first tech environment.
About the team
The People Technology team is building the systems foundation that lets GitLab scale as a global, all-remote company. We’re always raising the bar for what People technology can do, improving reliability, usability and intelligence across the platforms that power our People organization. You'll own and improve the operational toolkit that equips GitLab's Solutions Architects (SAs) to drive growth and deliver value for customers. As the SA team's go-to operational business partner, you'll make tools, workflows, reporting, and handoffs more effective and grounded in the SA's role throughout the customer journey.
You'll report to the Director of Customer Experience (CX) Operations. This is a senior individual contributor role with no direct reports.
What you’ll do
Own the SA operational toolkit and business requirements for systems, workflows, processes, reporting, and documentation. Partner with Revenue Technology, Revenue Analytics, and system owners on implementation, validation, data quality, and operational controls.
Manage operational support requests for tooling, access, assignments, and data issues, including triage, routing, resolution visibility, and root-cause improvements.
Improve the processes and system workflows for requesting, assigning, and tracking SA engagements. Implement intake requirements and routing rules agreed with SA leadership, and automate manual steps.
Document and operationalize the SA engagement model and cadences agreed with SA leadership and cross-functional teams, including responsibilities, rules of engagement, handoff criteria, and required customer information at key journey stages.
Own SA reporting requirements and data quality standards. Partner with Revenue Analytics to provide reliable visibility into capacity, engagement, technical evaluation progress, and outcomes so SA leaders can assess effectiveness and prioritize resources.
Support SA leaders with coverage and capacity planning, business reviews, and operating rhythms that help teams prioritize customer needs and resources.
Turn field feedback into operational improvements. Lead testing, rollout, and documentation, partner on enablement, and follow through until changes are adopted and sustained.
What you’ll bring
Relevant experience in Solutions Architect, Sales, Revenue, or Customer Experience Operations.
Understanding of technical sales, pre-sales, and post-sales, SA engagement models, technical evaluations, and how SAs demonstrate customer value, support growth, and coordinate with post-sales teams.
Hands-on experience with Salesforce or comparable customer relationship management (CRM) tools, reporting, data quality, and workflow improvement; ability to translate field needs into clear system requirements.
Structured problem-solving skills: turn ambiguous issues into clear workstreams, own delivery, and sustain measurable improvements in efficiency and adoption.
Strong quantitative skills and proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets for capacity, coverage, productivity, and scenario modeling.
Strong hands-on experience with artificial intelligence (AI)-native tools to support custom reports and data modeling scenarios.
Sound judgment, project management, and communication skills; ability to work independently, build trust, and influence across a global, distributed organization.
Preferred, not required: experience supporting a technical field organization in business-to-business software; Structured Query Language (SQL) or equivalent data-querying experience; and experience with GitLab or development, security, and operations (DevSecOps) and AI-enabled automation.

About the role
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design, implement, and evolve product capabilities while solving high-scope backend problems and influencing the technical and product direction of our teams. You will move beyond "assigned work" to actively improve the quality, reliability, and performance of our systems. You will work across product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security boundaries, making sound architectural trade-offs, communicating complex ideas clearly in an asynchronous environment, and helping define the standards for a high-scale, global product.
Why you’ll love this role
High Impact:
You aren't just shipping features; you are shaping the architecture of a global platform used by millions.
Technical Agency:
You will influence team objectives, technical direction, and long-range goals, helping us solve problems of high scope and complexity.
Innovative Culture:
You will get to experiment with and integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows, moving beyond simple prompt engineering to build resilient, AI-assisted systems.
Autonomy:
You will thrive in our remote-first, asynchronous organization, where clear written communication and self-direction are the pillars of success.
User-Centric Collaboration:
You’ll partner closely with PMs and designers to shape requirements, ensuring every technical decision delivers genuine value to our users.
What you’ll do
Drive Technical Direction:
Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance, making pragmatic choices between modular-monolith code, shared components, or independently operated services.
Raise the Bar:
Advocate for product quality, security, availability, and performance. You will define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness.
Mentor & Lead:
Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve team delivery practices through code and design reviews.
Operational Excellence:
Diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues at scale. Participate in incident response and act as a technical owner where appropriate.
AI Integration:
Use AI in production engineering work to improve outcomes, evaluate its effectiveness, and coach others on responsible, high-judgment use.
On Call Support:
Take part in on-call or operational support where your team’s ownership model requires it.
What you’ll bring
Deep Backend Expertise:
A strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in a complex product or service environment.
Adaptability:
Proficiency in modern backend languages and a deep understanding of systems programming. We value the ability to learn and adapt over mastery of a single language.
Architectural Judgment:
Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
Influence:
Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear written communication, effectively bridging the gap between product needs and technical reality.
Agentic AI Expertise:
