About the Job:
We're looking for a senior security leader to run our Product Security team and partner to the Director of Security. In this role, you'll own how Security operates: a program led by risk rather than audit calendars, where engineering teams own their security health and Security informs, guides, and validates, where automation and AI take the first pass on every finding, and where posture is measured and published to executives every quarter. You'll build that model, starting with Product Security and extending across the division.
You'll bring a balance of people management, security judgment, and program leadership as you manage a team of security engineers, act as incident manager of record, hold delegated approval for vendor and access decisions, and run the division when the Director is in an audit, a board cycle, or on vacation. You'll work closely with every engineering team to make the secure path the easy one.
Responsibilities:
Manage the portfolio of your team's work, appropriately managing everyone's time and assigning them to the highest priority work.
Help your team and the engineering organization make sense of, and simplify, how security work gets done: who owns what, what is automated, and what Security stops doing.
Guide product engineering teams in owning their own security health: findings route to them with mapped severity, Security reviews and validates rather than fixes, and each team sees its security health in its own service review.
Own the wiring and routing of security findings and requests, driving down noise and the human-decision rate across intake, triage, and review.
Serve as incident manager of record for security incidents: first escalation for our service-level commitments, delegated approver for vendor and access decisions, and cover for the Director's operational duties.
Publish posture: monthly service-level attainment to engineering, quarterly posture to the executive team, and a risk register that drives priorities.
About You:
You have led a security team out of the gatekeeper model once already, and you can say what teams owned afterward, what Security stopped doing, and what the numbers did.
You think in risk, not control lists, and you would rather defend a priority call than a checklist.
You treat automation and AI as the first responder and yourself as the escalation path.
You have been the second leader to a director or CISO and know which decisions to make in their name.
You have run security incidents end to end, including the comms and the review afterward.
You were a strong Senior or Staff security engineer before you managed, and you can still read a PR, a threat model, or a cloud finding and make a call.
You track and drive metrics, and you understand what they can and can't tell you.
Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in a formal security or engineering management role, including managing senior engineers.
Experience moving a security function from gatekeeper to team ownership, with measurable results.
Experience as incident manager for security incidents at a SaaS company, including external communication.
Experience guiding teams through technical tradeoffs and developing senior engineers' careers.
The ability to track and drive metrics, and the wisdom to understand what they can and can't tell you.
Familiarity with AWS security at scale and with external audits (SOC 2, ISO 27001, or FedRAMP) as a participant or control owner.
Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
A thoughtful, empathetic approach to leadership and collaboration.

Staff Engineer
About LaunchDarkly Engineering
LaunchDarkly helps engineering organizations ship software and AI with speed, safety, and control. Our platform gives teams the confidence to release gradually, target experiences to the right audiences, learn through experimentation, understand what is happening in production, and respond quickly when risk appears.
Our engineers build the systems, services, SDKs, developer tools, cloud infrastructure, and product experiences that make this possible. The work spans high-scale distributed systems, reliable data and event pipelines, intuitive enterprise workflows, and AI-powered capabilities that help teams manage the next generation of software delivery.
LaunchDarkly’s SDKs are used in systems that perform trillions of feature flag evaluations each day, giving our engineering work a direct connection to the reliability and customer experience of software around the world. As the company grows, we are expanding beyond traditional feature management into experimentation, observability, and AgentControl—helping customers control more of the software and AI lifecycle. That creates an unusually broad set of technical challenges, visible customer impact, and room for engineers to shape what comes next.
We believe in the power of teams. We work with humility, openness, curiosity, and care; we value clear communication, thoughtful technical judgment, inclusive collaboration, and a strong sense of ownership. We encourage people to apply even when they do not meet every qualification listed below. We are interested in the experience, perspective, and potential you would bring to the role.
About the role
Staff scope at LaunchDarkly is defined by impact rather than title alone. The specific domain may include platform infrastructure, APIs, SDKs, data systems, observability, experimentation, feature management, or AI/agent capabilities.
As a Staff Engineer at LaunchDarkly, you will provide technical leadership beyond a single team. You will help define direction for important systems or product areas, guide complex initiatives, and create leverage by enabling other engineers to make better decisions and deliver with confidence.
Staff Engineers at LaunchDarkly are trusted for their judgment, influence, and ability to connect customer needs, business goals, product strategy, and technical execution. You may lead architecture across multiple teams, establish durable patterns, improve developer effectiveness, or help the organization navigate a significant change in technology or product direction.
This is an individual contributor role. You will lead through expertise, communication, and influence rather than through direct people management.
What you’ll do
Set technical direction for complex, high-impact systems, products, or cross-team initiatives.
Lead architecture and design work that improves scalability, performance, reliability, security, operability, and developer experience.
Clarify ambiguous problems, identify the highest-leverage opportunities, and help teams make timely, well-informed decisions.
Partner with Product, Design, Engineering Managers, and senior leaders to connect technical investments to customer and business outcomes.
Influence teams outside your immediate area through strong technical proposals, inclusive decision-making, and clear communication.
Improve engineering effectiveness through reusable patterns, paved paths, documentation, mentoring, and thoughtful process improvements.
Contribute directly to critical projects when hands-on technical work is the best way to create leverage.
Represent customer needs and production realities in technical and product discussions.
Develop other engineers through mentorship, feedback, and opportunities to grow their scope.
Qualifications
This level of expertise is typically found in engineers with 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
Deep understanding of event-driven architectures, streaming protocols (e.g., Server-Sent Events, WebSockets), and stateful connection management at scale.
Expertise in Go, Java, Rust or similar systems programming languages. (We use Go and a little bit of Rust.)
Significant experience delivering and operating production software, including systems or products with meaningful scale, complexity, or reliability requirements.
Demonstrated technical leadership across team or organizational boundaries, without relying on formal authority.
Experience making architecture and design decisions for complex systems and communicating the tradeoffs clearly.
A track record of turning ambiguous, high-impact problems into aligned plans and shipped outcomes.
Strong understanding of software quality, observability, operational health, security, and sustainable delivery practices.
Ability to balance long-term technical direction with pragmatic, incremental execution.
A collaborative leadership style grounded in curiosity, inclusion, clear communication, and respect for different perspectives.

We have multiple backend engineering roles open on various teams. The specific level, scope, and technical focus will be aligned to the opportunity and the candidate’s experience. Experience with cloud platforms, distributed systems, developer tools, SDK engineering, data infrastructure, observability, or AI/agent systems may be relevant for some teams.
Candidates may be considered for opportunities across product engineering, core engineering, feature management, observability, experimentation, data platform, cloud infrastructure, SDKs, and AI/agent product areas, depending on experience, interests, and business need.
As a Senior Backend Engineer at LaunchDarkly, you will design, build, and operate the services that power reliable software delivery for our customers. You may work on APIs, distributed systems, configuration and event pipelines, data services, SDK-related infrastructure, platform capabilities, or backend systems supporting our product experiences.
You will take ownership of complex, high-impact work from problem definition through production and iteration. You will partner with Product, Design, Staff Engineers, Engineering Managers, and adjacent teams to turn customer and business needs into simple, scalable solutions. Your work will influence technical direction within your team and, where appropriate, across team boundaries.
What you’ll do
Lead the design and delivery of large or ambiguous backend projects, breaking them into clear milestones and creating alignment with partners.
Design, implement, test, and operate production services and APIs that are scalable, secure, observable, and maintainable.
Make and communicate thoughtful tradeoffs across scalability, performance, reliability, security, maintainability, cost, and delivery speed.
Identify architectural risks, performance bottlenecks, operational gaps, and sources of technical friction; then drive durable improvements.
Improve the observability and operability of the systems you own, including metrics, logs, traces, alerting, service-level objectives, and incident follow-through.
Collaborate with Product, Design, Support, Customer Success, and other engineering teams to understand needs and deliver measurable customer outcomes.
Influence technical direction through design documents, architecture discussions, code reviews, and clear written and verbal communication.
Mentor engineers, raise the quality of technical decision-making, and contribute to a culture of inclusive collaboration and continuous improvement.
Participate in production support and incident response with calm ownership, turning operational lessons into lasting improvements.
Help evolve engineering practices, reusable patterns, and developer experiences that make other teams more effective.
Qualifications
7+ years of experience building and operating production software, with a track record of delivering meaningful customer or business impact.
Strong software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, testing, debugging, API design, and distributed-systems concepts.
Deep experience with a backend language such as Go, Python, Rust, or an equivalent language.
(Most of our teams use Go)
Experience designing systems that must remain reliable, observable, secure, and maintainable as usage, complexity, and team ownership grow.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects with ambiguous requirements, multiple stakeholders, or cross-team dependencies.
Sound judgment when evaluating architecture, technology choices, operational risk, and short- versus long-term tradeoffs.
Ability to explain complex technical decisions clearly and build alignment with technical and non-technical partners.
Experience mentoring engineers and strengthening team practices through feedback, documentation, pairing, or technical leadership.
A strong sense of ownership for production outcomes and downstream customer impact.
Comfort learning unfamiliar systems and navigating changing priorities with curiosity and a collaborative mindset.

The team is small, senior, and recently rebuilt. This is a frontline leadership role for a manager who treats operational health as a top priority, leads calmly through incidents, and creates leverage through software, automation, and reliable paved paths.
In your first year, you’ll lead a marquee infrastructure insourcing program from planning through completion. The program’s cost savings will help fund additional team growth, giving you the opportunity to deliver meaningful business impact while strengthening the infrastructure behind LaunchDarkly’s next stage of scale.

Responsibilities:
Lead and develop a senior Cloud Engineering team, providing clear expectations, coaching, feedback, performance management, and career-development support.
Own the operational health of LaunchDarkly’s cloud infrastructure, including incident response, on-call health, service-level objectives, resilience, and disaster recovery.
Launch and deliver a multi-quarter infrastructure insourcing program, including sequencing work, managing dependencies, communicating milestones, and ensuring a successful transition.
Guide technical priorities and tradeoffs across AWS infrastructure, networking, multi-region Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, GitOps, datastore operations, and compliance-related infrastructure.
Build leverage through software, automation, and paved paths that help product engineering teams use infrastructure safely and independently.
Support migrations by providing guidance, patterns, and enablement while maintaining clear ownership boundaries with partner teams.
Establish team norms for effective AI-assisted engineering and identify opportunities to reduce operational toil through AI and automation.
Maintain team health and continuity through change, fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and accountable environment.
Partner with Service Frameworks, Core Platform, Revenue Platform, Data Platform, and product engineering teams on shared infrastructure priorities and cross-team dependencies.
Communicate roadmaps, operational risks, investment needs, and progress clearly to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
Participate in hiring and team planning as the organization grows.
Qualifications:
2+ years of experience managing an infrastructure, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering team at a product company, including people management of an on-call team.
Demonstrated ownership of incident response, on-call health, and service-level objective frameworks for critical production systems.
Experience leading at least one multi-quarter infrastructure migration or insourcing program from planning through completion.
Technical fluency with AWS, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code practices, with the judgment to guide discussions and tradeoffs with senior engineers.
Experience taking over an established team and maintaining engagement, performance, and retention through a leadership transition.
A clear point of view on team norms and practices for AI-assisted engineering.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical and operational priorities to a range of audiences.
A thoughtful, calm, and accountable leadership approach, particularly during incidents and periods of change.
Nice to Haves
Experience with vendor negotiations or cloud cost management.
Experience supporting FedRAMP or other compliance-related infrastructure and operations.
Experience operating large-scale datastores or OLAP systems.
Experience growing a team through funded expansion.

Slow, inefficient development cycles, costly outages, and fragmented customer experiences are preventing developers from building their best software. The LaunchDarkly platform helps developers innovate on new features faster while protecting them with a safety valve to instantly rewind when things go wrong. Developers can target product experiences to any customer segment and maximize the business impact of every feature. And by gradually rolling out new application components, they escape nightmare "big-bang" technology migrations.
The LaunchDarkly platform was built to guide engineers to the next frontier of DevOps by:
Improving the velocity and stability of software releases, without the fear of end customer outages
Delivering targeted experiences by easily personalizing features to customer cohorts
Maximizing the business impact of every feature through the ability to experiment and optimize
Coordinating the release and optimization of software to provide consistent experiences across mobile platforms and device types
Improving the effectiveness and productivity of engineering teams, by providing insights into engineering cadence and stability
